Slope instability, particularly, in most part of the extended Township of Rinchending has become a serious problem for the municipality and district authorities.

The objectives of this project were: 1) To explore ALOS satellite data for identification of landslide points, 2) To assess landslide susceptibility using a deterministic model called SINMAP, 3) To compare landslide map generated by the SINMAP model with the existing landslide map prepared from weighted overlay method, 4) To update the previous landuse/landcover map using the ALOS data.

The project aimed at modeling the rain triggered landslides utilizing a deterministic slope stability predictive tool based on RS and GIS technologies.
The study area, Phuntsholing has very steep terrains with weak geology, and during the rainy season the region witnesses many landslides and the situation are getting worse due to population pressure as well as infrastructure development, especially roads.
